The Permanent Representative of Canada to the Organization of American States, Stuart Savage, today assumed the Chair of the OAS Permanent Council, a position he will hold until September 30, 2025.

During the ceremony held at the Organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC, Ambassador Savage said that during his term, “we hope to use our time to emphasize and benefit from the Council's wisdom on the issues of democracy and human rights, and to make that a focus of a lot of our work and proposed actions and items on the agenda over the next three months.”

For her part, the outgoing Vice Chair and Permanent Representative of Ecuador, Mónica Palencia, indicated that she was leaving the post in good hands. “We are confident that under your leadership, the Permanent Council will address the major challenges of the Americas with responsibility, balance, and broad vision—promoting consensus as a legitimate and effective instrument to achieve sustainability that strengthens the inter-American institutional framework and the collective well-being of our nations, while also managing consensus within dissent.”

The Vice Chair for the July–September term will be held by the Permanent Representative of Dominica, Steve Ferrol.

The Chair of the Permanent Council rotates every three months among the member states of the Organization, in alphabetical order. The Vice Chair rotates every three months in reverse alphabetical order.
