Chile Assumes Chair of the OAS Permanent Council

The Permanent Representative of Chile to the Organization of American States, Tomás Pascual, today assumed the Chair of the OAS Permanent Council, a position he will hold until December 31, 2025.

During the ceremony held at the Organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC, Ambassador Pascual stressed “The presidency of Chile will provide open and permanent channels of communication and will always be guided by the common interest, with a spirit of openness and transparency, promoting frank and effective debates.”

For her part, the outgoing Chair and Permanent Representative of Canada, Stuart Savage, said that he worked “to foster a spirit of collaboration and dignity that I think this Council merits and deserves. I think we've worked together to pragmatically address the issues that were before us and find solutions that moved us to something better,” and added that during his term of office, “Canada has kept democracy and human rights at the forefront.”

The Vice Chair for the October–December term will be held by the Permanent Representative of Costa Rica, Alejandra Solano.

The Chair of the Permanent Council rotates every three months among the member states of the Organization, in alphabetical order. The Vice Chair rotates every three months in reverse alphabetical order.
