The Columbus Library of the Organization of American States (OAS) hosted the launch of the Voluntary Group in Support of the Inter-American Juridical Committee and the Promotion of International Law (GAJUR). The initiative, proposed by Brazil and Mexico, creates an informal and flexible forum, open to all interested States, with the objective of seeking convergence to advance the development of the inter-American corpus juris.
GAJUR seeks to reaffirm the regional commitment to a rules-based international order and to strengthen the role of international law as the standard of conduct among States. Among its objectives are to ensure visibility for the Inter-American Juridical Committee (CJI), strengthen the work carried out by the Secretariat for Legal Affairs (SLA) and its Departments, and promote the ratification of or accession to inter-American legal instruments.
The launch event opened with remarks by Assistant Secretary General Laura Gil. Dr. Jean Michel Arrighi, Secretary for Legal Affairs, delivered a lecture on the development of international law from the OAS perspective, with Ambassador Luz Elena Baños Rivas, Permanent Representative of Mexico, serving as moderator. Brazil was elected to serve as the Group’s first coordinator until the conclusion of the next General Assembly, in June 2026.
