Electoral Authorities to Debate Ways to Promote Access to Electoral Processes in the Americas

The Organization of American States (OAS), with the support of the United States government, will host the Seventh Inter-American Meeting of Electoral Management Bodies, titled, “Increasing Access to Electoral Processes,” on May 6 and 7, at the Organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC.

Joining the event will be OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza; the Permanent Representative of the United States to the OAS and current Chairwoman of the Permanent Council, Ambassador Carmen Lomellin; the President of the Election Assistance Commission of the United States (EAC), Donetta Davidson; and the President of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Matthew S. Petersen. Electoral authorities from over 25 countries of the region will also be present at the meeting.

The event’s agenda will include topics such as: models of engagement between electoral management bodies and political parties in electoral processes; the role of media during electoral processes; access to voting for persons with disabilities; and OAS initiatives in the electoral field.

The Inter-American Meetings of Electoral Management Bodies seek to promote the effective exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices on electoral administration in the hemisphere. In particular, these meetings facilitate horizontal cooperation, to continuously strengthen national capabilities and further improve elections in the Americas.
