OAS Deploys Electoral Observation Mission in Mexico for the Election of Judicial Authorities
May 23, 2025
The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the elections of authorities of the Federal Judiciary of Mexico begins its work in the country this weekend ahead of the elections scheduled for Sunday, June 1.
The OAS Mission is headed by former Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz Valenzuela. The diplomat has previously led several OAS observation missions, including the Mission deployed for Mexico’s federal elections in 2024 and Ecuador’s general elections in 2025.
The OAS Mission is composed of 16 experts from 10 countries and will analyze topics related to electoral organization and technology, electoral justice, the judiciary, and women’s participation—areas the OAS has also examined in three previous judicial elections in the region. During its time in Mexico, the Mission will meet with government officials, electoral and judicial authorities, candidates, members of civil society, and academics, among other stakeholders, to gather diverse perspectives on the electoral process.
After the elections, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations. A final report will later be submitted to the Permanent Council of the Organization.
This is the eighth electoral mission deployed by the OAS in Mexico, and the first dedicated to observing the election of Federal Judiciary authorities.
The deployment of the OAS Mission is made possible thanks to financial contributions from Canada, Colombia, France, Korea, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Morocco, the Netherlands, and the United States.
