Statement of the OAS General Secretariat on the Attack against the Public Prosecutor of Uruguay
September 29, 2025
The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) expresses its strongest condemnation of the attack perpetrated in the early hours of September 28, 2025, against the home of Uruguayan Public Prosecutor Mónica Ferrero. This attack constitutes an extremely serious act that threatens not only the integrity of a high-ranking government official, but also fundamental institutions within the framework of the rule of law.
The General Secretariat expresses its solidarity with Prosecutor Ferrero, her family, and the Uruguayan government and people, while supporting the swift response of the national authorities, who have launched an investigation and security measures.
The OAS General Secretariat reaffirms that no form of violence, intimidation, or threat can undermine the independence of the judiciary or the democratic commitment of the peoples of the Americas. The defense of justice and those who represent it is a hemispheric responsibility, and the OAS is ready to continue accompanying Uruguay in this effort.
The OAS reiterates its full solidarity with Uruguay’s institutions and its democracy, and trusts that the strength of the national response, together with regional and international support, will make it clear that there is no room in the Americas for impunity, fear, or violence. Defending justice is defending democracy, and defending democracy is guaranteeing the free and secure future of our peoples.
