OAS Electoral Mission in Honduras Calls to Expedite Tallying and Await Completion of the Vote Count

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS/EOM) in Honduras, led by former Foreign Minister of Paraguay Eladio Loizaga, calls for the tallying process to be expedited while guaranteeing traceability measures that provide certainty regarding the results.
The OAS/EOM has maintained an uninterrupted presence monitoring the post-electoral process, observing the count of tally sheets and the retrieval of materials at the Electoral Logistics Center and the Technological Warehouse, as well as the development and implementation of technological solutions for the processing and dissemination of results. To date, in a context of evident delays, the OAS/EOM remains attentive to the various procedures that constitute this process. It should be noted that the statistical data gathered by OAS observers at the various polling stations observed confirm an extremely tight result.
Likewise, the Mission has noted that the management and processing of electoral material has experienced delays and interruptions. In addition to the above, the OAS/EOM has recorded a marked lack of expertise in development and execution, particularly regarding technological solutions, which has caused delays in the tallying process. From Sunday night through Thursday, the Mission recorded intervals in the availability of the preliminary results dissemination website.
The OAS Mission commends the attitude of those who have remained patient and calls for calm during this crucial stage of the process. It is fundamental that the citizenry, and especially the political parties, continue to exercise the powers of oversight and vigilance conferred upon them by law.
At the same time, the OAS/EOM considers it imperative that the electoral authorities fully guarantee that the subsequent stages of the process—including the high volume of tally sheets not yet counted, the special scrutiny, and the challenge phase—are carried out with total clarity, maximum efficiency, and without any type of delay.
Tomorrow, Sunday, December 7, the OAS Electoral Mission will be observing the special election process in San Antonio de Flores, in the department of El Paraíso, where inhabitants will vote to elect their local and national authorities.
The OAS/EOM will remain in the country, observing the development of the process with its recognized autonomy.
