OAS Deploys Electoral Observation Mission in Dominican Republic

  May 6, 2010

Through the signing of the Agreement on Observation Procedures for the General, Congressional and Municipal Regular Elections of May 16, 2010, at the Central Electoral Board (or Junta Central Electoral, JCE), a Mission of Electoral Observation of the Organization of American States (OAS) was established today in Santo Domingo.

The Agreement was signed by the Chief of Mission, Ambassador Adam Blackwell, who currently serves as OAS Secretary for External Relations, and by President Julio Cesar Castaños Guzmán on behalf of the Central Electoral Board. This will guarantee OAS observers free movement in the entire Dominican territory and access to all of the activities surrounding the electoral process.

The Mission of Electoral Observation of the OAS will rely on more than 50 observers from 20 countries and will remain in Dominican Republic until after the day of the elections. Subsequently, the Chief of Mission will present an oral report to the OAS Permanent Council on the observed process.
