  May 24, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) today sent his condolences to the Government of the United States and the people of Missouri, a state that has suffered huge losses and devastation as a result of a tornado.

In a letter addressed to United States Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton, Secretary General Insulza wrote, “On behalf of the Organization of American States, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the Government of the United States and the people of Missouri, for the many lives that were lost and the hundreds more wounded or displaced by the tornado storms that recently tore through portions of the Midwest, causing especially brutal damage in Joplin, MO.”

He also wrote, “Please convey our sincere concern and deep sympathy to the families, who lost their loved ones in this severe catastrophe. During this excruciating time, we want to reaffirm our disposition to collaborate in any efforts your government esteems pertinent.”
