Civil society informed about alleged arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, inhumane conditions in detention centers, and restrictions to access asylum. They also denounced abuses in third-country transfers, violations of due process, and the harmful impact on families, children, and communities.
For its part, United States emphasized its sovereign right to control borders and combat irregular migration. It also affirmed its adherence to international obligations in asylum screening and noted transparency in third country agreements.
The IACHR recognized States’ authority over migration and border control but stressed that such policies must respect human rights. Likewise, it expressed concern over reports of arbitrary detentions, disappearances, due process violations, and called for transparency, accountability, and protection of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers' rights.
